How to use Chemex?

A Chemex, is a pour over coffee maker that produces a clean and flavourful cup of coffee. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to effectively use a chemex.

• Ingredients and Tools:
• Chemex Coffee Maker
• Chemex coffee filters
• Dynasty of Coffee Filter Coffee
• Hot water
• Timer
• Scales
• Stirring utensil (long spoon)

Step 1 – Prepare your equipment

1. Place the chemex filter on the top of the Chemex.
2. The thicker, multi-fold side should align with the spout of the Chemex.
3. Rinse the filter paper with hot water to remove the paper taste and to keep the Chemex warm.
4. Discard the rinse water.

Step 2 – Measure your coffee

• A general guideline is to use 1-2 tablespoons of coffee for every 177ml of water. This can be adjusted to your taste.

Step 3 – Heat your water

• Boil your water and allow it to cool slightly to reach the desired temperature of 90-96 degrees Celsius.

Step 4 – Add your coffee grounds

1. Place your Chemex on a scale and add your 1-2 tablespoons of filter coffee, depending on your strength preference.
2. Add the measured grounds into the centre of the Chemex filter.

Step 5 – Bloom and Pour

1. Start your timer and add just enough hot water to cover the grounds completely and saturate the evenly. This process is called the “bloom”.
2. Allow the coffee to bloom for 30 seconds. This process releases carbon dioxide and prepares the coffee for extraction.
3. After the bloom, continue pouring in the hot water, in circular motions, gradually covering all the coffee grounds.
4. Keep pouring until you have added your desired amount of water to coffee ratio.

Step 6 – Steep and Pour

1. Allow the coffee to steep for 3-4 minutes. Adjust this steeping time to your taste. A longer steeping time will result in a stronger coffee.
2. After steeping, give the coffee one more stir to allow for even extraction and let it drain completely.

Step 7 – Pour and Enjoy
Carefully lift the Chemex paper filter with the used coffee grounds and dispose of them.

Pour your brewed coffee from the Chemex into a mug.
Serve and enjoy your flavourful coffee from Chemex.
To clean a Chemex, rinse it with hot water immediately after use and ensure it is completely dry before it’s next use.
